The New Charter — It Would Eliminate Local Democracy

“Charter?  What’s that?” Most Newton residents are hardly aware that Newton has a Charter, let alone that a new version is up for a vote in November.  But in fact the proposed new charter is no small matter. It would be equivalent to the United States getting a whole new Constitution.

We strongly oppose the proposed new Charter because it would eliminate genuine local representation.  It would have ALL councilors elected at large, meaning by all residents of the city. You would have nobody to specifically represent you in your ward.

A new organization, Newton Citizens for Local Representation, is coordinating efforts to defeat the new charter.  You can help in many ways.  Visit their web site at www.newtondemocracy.org.
